Lost data modelling functionality between EA version 10 and 12
« on: December 08, 2016, 10:30:57 pm »
There has been made substantial changes in the data modelling in version 12. We have created some application which depends on some data modelling features from version 10. Now, we would like to migrate, but we see couple of serious issues, because following elements are no more accessible in EA version 12:
Columns - no more tagged values and additional stereotypes
Table operation - impossible to create operations of new stereotypes (and to use its columns, pre-conditions and tagged values)
Has anybody an idea how to handle this?

First thing to try is open the MDG Technologies dialog and make sure that "Core Extensions" is enabled. It should be the third one on the list.

All the MDG technologies are enabled. Even that "Core Extensions".

OK, in that case more information is needed. Tell us exactly what you are doing, what you can see and what you would hope to see. Remember, we can't see your screen so your instructions need to be good enough that we can reproduce what you see.

Ok, here are all the problems in more detail.

1. Column description
We use EA primarily for modelling of datawarehouses. In DW world, it is common to have more fields for description of a column. One for column comment (which goes to the database), another one for business description and another one for technical description. You can check competitive CASE tools, that they, mostly, support more descriptive fields for columns. Even EA did this, but from version 12 it is no more possible. There is only one field for column description and that's all. In version 10, we added fields for business and technical description as tagged values (see pic11), but in version 12 we are not able to access these tagged values (see pic12). When migrated to version 12, our models would be unusable.

2. Column stereotype
In version 10, there was possibility to add another stereotypes to columns. We used this to add some important information about column behaviour (see pic21). But additional stereotypes are no more possible in version 12.

3. Column operation
In version 10, there was possibility to add operations of user defined stereotypes (except of standard PK, FK, unique, index, check, trigger, proc). We used it to add operations of two additional sterotypes (Phase_Basic and Phase_Update). This is no more possible in version 12. User defined operation are visible though, but not all of it's properties are accessible (we used columns, which are still accessible and pre-conditions and tagged values, which are inaccessible) and there is not possible to add such a new operations. You can see situation from versions 10 resp. 12 at pictures pic31 resp. pic32. The way we used operation columns (pic33), pre-conditions (pic34) and tagged values (pic35) you can see at mentioned pictures.

I would like to attach pictures, but it looks I'm not allowed to do it. If you give me your address, I will sent it to you.

The properties dialog for columns has been updated but you can still add multiple stereotypes from the Properties window (Alt+1) and you can access tagged values from the Tagged Values window (Ctrl+Shift+6). For any other issues you will need to contact support (use the Report a Bug link at the foot of the page).

I'm able to access tagged values using Ctrl+Shift+6, but not the properties window. Alt+1 displays property dialog for the table, not for the column.

I have asked our guru in this area about this, and his response is:

"The improved data modeling functionality introduced in EA v12 was targeted at modeling relational databases/tables, yet the objects you are attempting to model are not relational tables. Therefore if you were to change the stereotype of your objects from 'table' to something else - maybe 'dwtable' for data warehouse table - the default Class property screens (which give you direct access to all the properties that v10 did) would be shown instead of the data modeling ones."

Try that and let us know how you get on.
Best Regards, Roy

We are trying to program our own UI. Because our classes are in fact normal tables, we need to duplicate most of standard functionality of EA. But we are not able to find sources for some features. Could you tell me where to find list of extended properties for individual databases?
