Project to make adding images easier
« on: May 11, 2005, 06:06:22 am »
I have an idea and want to know if anyone wants to join in.

Currently it takes a lot of steps to add an image into a forum message.  I have an idea for a program that would simplify this.

I would like to follow a whole development process to build this app. (Its a fairly small app)

First I will start by creating an activity diagram of what I currently do to add an image, and then have you judge the diagram (I am new to UML) and I will correct it.

Then we can move on from there.

I will do all the modeling and building of the app, you only need to "speak".  The purpose being to learn a development process, get better at uml, and build a usefull app.

Interested?  The resulting program will be free of use of course.

Excellent idea!

Can you also provide feedback about issues you discover in this process?

Go for it!

I don't hope so  ;D

Yes! I'll try to give feedback as possible.

Here is the activity diagram showing my current process.  It does not show the pain of navigating directories.

Also does this look like a correct activity diagram?  I am aware that some of you do not care for diamonds, but it seems to make the diagram less messy for me.

Does anyone have other processes for adding images?

btw - The copy to clipboard feature in EA is a good idea, but the quality is so poor that it is not usable.

Ugh,

I wanna see the "Right-click diagram and then select save to FTP site option" addon defined instead...

Bill,
instead of going directly into details with the activity diagram, I'd suggest to sketch a robustness diagram. The use case behind is quite obvious: Post Message (Actor User is posting a message to the board in order to express himself as part of a communication sequence). Now the next would be to see what "tools" are necessary to accomplish that task. If you get the picture, you then could start drawing Activity diagrams in order to detail things. Your diagram above resembles these ancient flow charts. IMHO you don't get a clearer picture when using this kind of description. Much to much boxes to read. I'd better like a rough overview. Details are kept much better in pseudo programming language - at a later stage.

fyi:  I am going to put this project on hold for a few weeks until my broken arm heals.

I fell off a ladder pulling palm tree branches down.

You should have modeled your project with UML in advance in order to rule out falling from a ladder ;)

Get well soon :)

Best wishes, too.

Now, putting on QA hat: what process improvements or risk mitigation measures would you recommend to prevent others from suffering your fate ?  ;)

Do you mean on a meta or a meta-meta level. Or even a meta^meta level ;D

Actually the problem with his model is that he assumes the RegularGuy class is a generalization of the SkilledLaborer class.  RegularGuy can easily inherit the ChannelSurfer class.  But that class doesn't have a TrimTrees operation.   Now he'll have to redo all of his  sequence diagram.  :P
