9 or 13 diagrams?
« on: April 02, 2008, 09:18:54 am »
The numbers always misleading. the UML standard says there are 13 diagrams and I find Borland insists on 9 diagrams.

Which one is the standard 9 or 13?

Sparx Systems agrees with the UML standard.

http://www.sparxsystems.com/products/ea.html

Structural Diagrams:
  • Class
  • Object
  • Composite
  • Package
  • Component
  • Deployment
Behavioral Diagrams:
  • Use Case
  • Communication
  • Sequence
  • Interaction Overview
  • Activity
  • State
  • Timing
I'm afraid I'm not sure what diagrams Borland says don't count (or where they are saying this)

Perhaps he is looking at a Borland version that targets UML 1.x. Weren't there about 9 diagram types at some point around UML 1.4 or so?
No, you can't have it!

Yep, that was my first thought too. UML 1.5 specification names the following nine diagram types:

UML supports the following diagrams:
class diagram, object diagram, use case diagram, sequence diagram, collaboration diagram, state
diagram, activity diagram, component diagram, and deployment diagram.
[Note: UML 1 collaboration diagram = UML 2 communication diagram]

That's likely it.

Of course if you are flogging a product that does not handle UML 2.x gracefully (or just fully) then you can always point at 1.4x or 1.5 and say that's the "standard" since ISO adopted it.

All true, and given the dates involved it is no surprise that the standard version is great for writing legacy code.

For those of us working in the present, let alone planning for the future, the new diagram types, and BPMN and such really help.

But of course that's just my 0.02 CAD worth...

But, these days 0.02 Canadian dollars = 0.01952934 U.S. dollars so I guess your opinion is more valuable!
