Visualize message type/protocol in diagram
« on: September 12, 2014, 06:24:41 am »
Hi,

I would like to use archimate for modeling a view diagrams. Can someone help me with the following: how can I indicate that for example a connection between applications is https? Or indicate that soap/XML is used?

What would typically the way to do this.

Thanks

I can't give you a good advise since I use Archimate only in rare circumstances. But others have mentioned here that there's a very good (IIRC free) book about Archimate from a guy somewhere in Belgium or Holland which had become some kind of official documentation. It has been mentioned here on the forum but searching is not real fun. So I'd recommend Mama Google :-)

Or perhaps some of those posters can help you here.

And to answer the original question, why not just put a name on your Communication Path connector?

We are setting the stereotype = <protocol> and giving the communication line a descriptive name on what is being sent.  This made it easy to visualize

As mentioned earlier communication path is one option or alternatively in a similar manner to the example on page 84 (actor co-operation view) of the ArchiMate Spec v2.0 indicates a phone or e-mail is used by customers and customer relations you could use an interface for the application / technology to show https.

ArchiMate 3.0 brings a couple of interesting new elements. Have a look at a "Technology process": "A sequence of technology behaviors that achieves a specific outcome". I'd say this would capture a more advanced communication protocol, such as OAuth, or a more advanced web service (SOAP with WS-Reliable Messaging).
