Title: EA Trial on MacOS / wine / Core Dump!
Post by: saikrish on November 09, 2017, 10:53:06 am

I have also sent multiple emails to Sparx Support <support@sparxsystems.com>.

What I did:
wine .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files\ \(x86\)/Sparx\ Systems/EA\ Trial/EA.exe
Open Ultimate version on Trial
Open EAExample Project that comes with EA
Double Click on Getting Started>Basic Modeling Package
double click on Structural Diagrams>Package Diagrams
Repeated (3-4 times) popup of createOneFont and getNewFont2 errors
accept OK for every error
And after that you get the crash dialog anytime - can't really predict.

Pretty much, one can't do anything on EA Trial version to evaluate on MacOS.

I once tried it and got it to run under MacOS (that time I was disappointed with Parallels). But - I got back to Parallels. It's simply the best mule to carry Windoze on a Mac.

I have been asked to provide EA Trial. Now if I have to buy Parallels I have to seek separate request to my boss.
He would then try to calculate combined cost into EA uses, and consider (most likely competitor) Avolution ABACUS if they have a Mac OS version. I don't have time to do too many exercise with EA evaluation.

Apologies.. but I think EA must fix this problem.

Hi sailkrish,

I'm personally far from an expert at anything MacOS related.

I'd recommend contacting our support team directly using the 'Report a Bug' link at the bottom of this page.

The link provided shows the setup steps, although I'm not sure of the variation between the brew instructions on that page and the steps on our page. I'm not sure what other information our support team would require to determine why it's failing on your system.

I think he already has contacted Support...

support@sparxsystem.com has become comfortably numb to my request. I am surprised by their claim of reputation. Perhaps they will support only those who have already purchased the product and not those on seeking to buy. Very disheartening to me as I supported EA for my org use, and no response to having acknowledge the issue.

OK.. here is an update for all those interested. I was able to get past the font errors by using my wineprefix to win32. Now, that clearly tells me that EA has issues with win64.

There are other dragging issues for me to use EA on MacOS. The fonts. I did install per suggested fonts using winetricks corefonts. The fonts and appearance is pathetic and extremely unpleasant for me even suggest that I did a fair trial and present my findings to colleagues. I don't want them to laugh at me on fonts setup.

Is there a way that I can get to view (la WYSIWIG as is in MS Windows version) fonts clear and crips? We are nearing 2020 right in two years.. I should not be fighting like this. Apologies for being frustrated on evaluation.

wine is a wheelchair for disabled Windoze users. No wonder you have issues. Try using a horse carriage like Parallels. Still no Lamborghini, but definitely less hassle than you have with wine.

Thanks for the suggestion on parallels, that I need to review. Also, I wonder why not Sparx System directly support MacOS? Why do I have to beat around the bush if EA Mac version is available?

I suspect that the revenue from a mac version would not support the development costs.  However if they are in a position to move to .Net core then multiple O/S versions will appear.
