« on: April 30, 2014, 09:01:49 pm »
I would like to use Sparx EA for APM. i.e. Application Portfolio Management.

If I can, how? If I can't,  I request APM be added as an enhancement.

General Board / Windows 10 Technical Preview to run Sparx EA 10
« on: March 06, 2015, 05:30:42 am »
Will Sparx EA 10 run in Windows 10 Technical Preview?  The reason I ask is because I just installed the latest version of Parallels Desktop 10 for Mac (Version 10.1.4 build 28883) on a Macbook Pro running Yosemite with 8gig ram and 1TB SSD storage)
Parallels now has a one-click install option to download and configure Windows 10 Technical Preview. I configured the Win10TP VM  to have 1 CPU, 4gig RAM, and a 96GB hard drive.

I guess he does not mind: peter.doomen at sdworx.com

Thank you.  I just wrote to Peter:

Peter,
I am editing your book to add more images and to clear up passages that are confusing to a beginner such as myself.
I have attached a copy of your book with the changes I have made so far. My last change is on page 32 but I will continue until I have gone through the entire book.
Of course I will never, ever give anyone a copy of this book!!! It is your book and I give you 100% permission to use any of my changes in any way you deem fit.
I posted about this on the English Sparx forum

You can contact Peter via his web site (on the book) or via Leanpub.

Mr. Doomen appears to have removed references to a website or to an email address from his books and from Leanpub and replaced them with a suggestion to follow him on Twitter:

Perhaps you have an oldish copy of one of his books from before its Twitter-ification?

I have begun work on a revised version of Peter Doomen's Leanpub book, "Teach Yourself Enterprise Architecture in Ten Days".  I converted his pdf (EA-in-10-days) into a docx file (EA-in-10-days.docx).  Now, I am editing the docx file to add more images (created via TechSmith Snagit 11) and will amplify passages in the text that are overly terse.
I have not yet contacted Mr. Doomen but can't imagine he will mind. I will donate the improved book back to him with no wish for any compensation, only the wish that he incorporate the improvements into the book he sells.
Getting this book polished, and later creating a separate edition for Sparx EA 11 will benefit the Sparx community.  If anybody knows how to contact Mr. Doomen, please let me know.  So far all I can find is his Twitter handle.

I just received this response from the (German) Sparx sister company regarding the book I found on Amazon named:  "Project Management with UML and Enterprise Architect from Sparx Systems, Version 9.2 ". (I corrected his grammar a little):
Quote
Currently the English version is for Sparx EA 9.2, and the German for EA 10.
The translation for EA 11 is in progress and will be published within the next 2 months.

Thanks for the helpful answers.  I just purchased the 3 recommended books.  Was surprised to find a 4th book on that site as well published on 2014-02-09: "From EA Newbie to EA Expert".
Here is a direct link to buy that book only: https://leanpub.com/EA-in-10-days
It's 147 pages, and looks like the best book for me to start with.
I also posted a question on the sister Sparx Forum (in English, although the forum is in German) to ask information about a Sparx EA 10 version of ""Project Management with UML and Enterprise Architect from Sparx Systems, Version 9.2 ". No response yet.

General Board / Is this Sparx book relevant for Sparx 10.10 ?
« on: April 10, 2014, 09:56:08 pm »
I am using Sparx 10.10 and am a newbie. There is a book on Amazon named:  "Project Management with UML and Enterprise Architect from Sparx Systems, Version 9.2 ".
Would this be worthwhile, or is it not helpful because it uses Sparx 9.2.
I am looking for the simplest ways to get past beginner Sparx knowledge to improve my skills to be low intermediate.
Also wondering if for learning purposes it's best to use my Sparx EA 10.10 or if it's better to download the beta of Sparx 11. Also wondering if Sparx 11 can co-existent on same Windows computer with Sparx 10.

Bugs and Issues / Adding Tagged Value of _Bezier to a Connector
« on: April 17, 2014, 09:41:50 pm »
I followed this passage in Peter Doomen's "Teach Yourself Enterprise Architect in 10 Days" and it worked.  But it's such a convoluted way to make a connector line bend, that I wonder if there is an easier way:
Quote
It is easy to make a connector curved. Open the connector properties by clicking it, then choose “Tagged Values” and add a tagged value called “_Bezier” with value 1.  A little square appears in the middle of the connector. Drag it to curve the line.

Bugs and Issues / Re: EA 10 control_click not selecting multiple obj
« on: April 18, 2014, 09:22:59 pm »
I was wrong all along.  CONTROL CLICK has been working all this time,  but I was too much of a newbie to realize it was working.  I had expected that the gray outline box would appear around each selected object, but that is not how it works.  That gray outline will always appear around the currently clicked element....   what I had failed to notice is that the trailing selected objects have a less obvious set of small boxes around each selected object.
So, everything is working and I simply did not know how to recognize what "working okay" looked like.

I asked a colleague at work to try CONTROL CLICK on his Sparx EA 10.10 installation, and it works correctly for him.  So, that rules out it being a problem related to EA 10.10.
I also tried, at work on my own Laptop  turning off the setting I had that makes a circle appear around the mouse when I click the CONTROL key.  Turning that off had no effect-- for me on Sparx EA 10.10 both at work and at home,  it does not do multi-select.

Ctrl click works fine for me for entities, except when I accidentally click on a connector, in which case I loose all the entities I have already selected (grrrr).
Yesterday I tried CONTROL CLICK on a diagram using Sparx 10.10 install on my work computer.  It did the same as thing my home computer does (which also runs Sparx 10.10). I.e. CONTROL CLICK selects only the last element clicked and as it does so un-selects the prior element clicked.
I wonder if this only occurs in Sparx 10.10 but not earlier versions such as 10.08?

First, do have have any keyboard or mouse helper utilities installed. I have seen multiple occasions where users have had something like that installed and it has system wide overridden Ctrl+Click behavior.

Second, I have seen a situation where a customized toolbar resulted in the Project Browser selection to change after selecting anything. If you have customized the toolbars at all then you could try resetting them (Tools | Customize)
I do have a Windows setting turned on that makes a circle appear around the mouse when I click only the control key.

But system wide, Control + click works correctly everywhere else except in a Sparx Diagram  (In this case, a Strategic Modeling...Strategy Map).

As you suggested I did a toolbar reset.

But, I just noticed that it says in the book, "EA In 10 Days":
Quote
ctrl + click on the diagram creates a new element of the same type as the last element you created

And sure enough, when I do ctrl + click on a blank place in the diagram it creates a diagram object there.

But I still really need a way to multi-select objects in a diagram.  Do have some other suggestions?

When I am in a Sparx EA 10.10 diagram, holding down the CNTRL key and then left CLICK-ing the mouse on two or more diagram objects does not select multiple objects, it only selects the last object clicked.    Is there a Sparx setting required to make CNTRL_CLICK work as expected?

Bugs and Issues / syskeys.dat file being set to length of zero
« on: March 12, 2013, 04:37:43 am »
On Sparx EA 10  with increasing frequently, shared license file syskeys.dat is mysteriously becoming a file with a length of zero.  This locks out all users of shared license file syskeys.dat  until it is restored from a backup copy.  http://www.sparxsystems.com/enterprise_architect_user_guide/9.3/license_management/keystore_troubleshooting.html says that each user of the the shared license file must be granted Read, Write, and Modify access to it.  That same link says there can be issues if the shared license file is on a RAID drive.  But the link does not mention any situation where the license file becomes a zero length file.  It used to happen only ocassionally, but lately it has been happening about once per week.  One time it happened two days in a row. Oddly but fortunately, each time it has happened there has been a syskeys.dat.BAK file in the same directory.  Something is making a backup and then making syskeys.dat empty.  I opened a ticket about this but have not received a reply yet. It's been a week.  Has anyone else encountered this? What is the solution?  This is happening on a Windows 2003 server SP2.
