The ability to align the displayed text associated with an element's Name attribute would be helpful. For instance many times when I am dropping a Boundary onto a diagram I would like to have it displayed to the left.

A "text alignment "feature is described for the text associated with an embedded element...

Side Note: Icon's for alignment of elements in the Element/Alignment seems to indicate text, rather than objects...

Thanks again,
David

General Board / EA Featue - Discussion Forum (Link to)
« on: March 25, 2009, 04:44:41 am »
Version 7.5 Beta 3

I have been trying to start making use of EA's discussion forum feature.

For example I hace created a category (C), added a topic (T), added a post (P), and a reply (R)

My goal is to be able to create a hyperlink to a specific A, T, or P. and I seem to have come up against a wall...

If you create a hyperlink, and then set the hperlink type to "Forum: there is no hyperlink address field... so the result is the discussion form window is opened and focus seems to be on the first category.

If you look at the tagged value window you can see the $forum//(Hyperlink) field... it seems like you should be able to add the path, as if you right-click a post (P), you get the option to "Copy path to clipboard" and see C::T::P::R

So there seems all the parts are there I just dont seem to be able to get them all together in one sock so to speak...

Any ideas out there?

ALSO is anyone else making use of this feature?
I am interested in using it for FAQs within the model, also requirement discussions, what am I working on "entries", etc.

It has some very useful possibiliites with the ability to drag and drop any element (including diagrams) into the entry creating a link from the element to the post, etc.

Also, it seems that you CAN embed URLs?!

General Board / Element Appearance submenu "Align Text"
« on: February 07, 2009, 02:39:01 am »
Does anyone understand WHEN the options under this submenu for an element are enabled?

For instance, I drop a boundary or even a class/use case/etc. onto a diagram; name it, then when I check using the element menu bar, the "Appearance" submenu "Alignment" they ALWAYS are grayed out (disabled.)

This has finally got to me after years of working with EA  ;D

General Board / Element List - Features
« on: January 27, 2009, 12:12:41 pm »
Anyone know of away to:
  • Remove columns from being displayed (work-around is to dragging a column's "right hand" bar to the left until the column disappears)
  • Change the column display order

These might be features to be requested (searched but no hits...)

Anyone else have any thoughts about this view?

I am planning on using it as part of the desktop layout for requirement review...

General Board / Onion Model in EA (IanF. Alexander's Taxonomy)
« on: January 15, 2009, 11:19:11 am »
I am trying to model more formalized stakeholder analysis process based on the taxonomy proposed by Ian F. Alexander.

Link to his white paper:
http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/~iany/consultancy/stakeholder_taxonomy/stakeholder_taxonomy.htm

I have modeled the "onion layers/circles" as packages. Inside these packages I have the "Slot" packages. To add a new "Slot" within a circle would not require any changes to my stakeholder stereotype, just the adding of a new package.

When you drag and drop the stakeholder stereotype, you would then name it with a role applicable to the slot.

When you drag the stakeholder stereotype and drop as an "instance", then name the object with the name of the person it represents. I place these objects under their stakeholder (role), which is located under the slot, under the circle...

Additionally for now, I am exporting the root onion model package out as a CSV file, which is then linked to by the Stakeholder Metric presentation spreadsheet, until I have time to create a report via Add-In (for now not a bad way to prototype a solution.)

Thanks and I look forward to sharing and discussing!

General Board / Sys Req Specification Generation NOT using RTF
« on: January 30, 2007, 08:27:29 am »
Just wanted to start a separate topic for discussions about requirement specification generation NOT using EA's RTF capability (or very little of it...)

I have had some significant success with generation of a SRS for projects, using:

1. MS Word Document - Contains ONLY the documents formatting and structure defined in the "template" file, and using embedded links to MS Word "Sub Documents" for the section's boilerplate, database fields to pull information directly/indirectly from the EAP project on a RDMS, and modifying through VBA code embedded RTF documents containing EA information (either generated from EA, or using MS Access)

2. MS Access Contains queries, reports, code and serves as a front-end to the RDMS EA project's information. From this I pull EA data, massage it, and update and/or EA and generate documentation in the form of a RTF files for use by MS Word.

3. MS Excel - Format EA Relationship Traceability Matrix output, for inclusion in MS Word as an embedded object.

Anyone else interested in discussing different approaches, and sharing their success stories and bits of wisdom?

General Board / EA and Dimensions (Version Control)
« on: January 19, 2007, 03:04:58 pm »
Anyone doing any work with Dimensions (formally PVCS) as the version control tool integrated with EA?

Was planning on using Subversion, but company decided to go with Dimension...

General Board / Features, Requirements, and Business Rules
« on: December 27, 2006, 08:01:34 pm »
Okay, with Build 801 the release notes say... "Added ability to create Requirement metaclasses in UML Profile models"

Sounds good, previously could not stereotype a requirement within EA, so was unable to create a Business Rule stereotype that way (used an XML file defined manually to create it...)

EA uses the "Type" field to indicate the stereotype for the base class "Feature" & "Requirement." But I can't seem to get "Synch Tagged Values and Constraints..." to have an affect.

HOW do I use this new capability the release notes describes?

My goal is actually pretty simple:

Add Tagged Values: Risk & Priority to Feature & Requirement, then create a stereotype of Requirement as "Business Rule" with a tagged value that indicates "BR_Kind"...

Any suggestions, thoughts, or insights?!!

Thanks!

General Board / Inverted Triangle Above Use Case
« on: December 27, 2006, 04:22:44 pm »
Okay, I am offically going nuts!

One of my use cases, now has an inverted red triangle above it? Any idea WHAT this is or what it represents??

Can't seem to get a hit in the help files, or on the forums..

General Board / Security Group Permissions
« on: October 30, 2006, 06:56:27 pm »
I am currently attempting to establish a robust security model using Corporate editions of EA and EA's security management features...

I am having some difficulty mapping the list of available permissions with specifically what they enable you to do...

MY PLAN:
1.) I am establishing a single shared model on Oracle, and then establishing new root node projects... (e.g., Shared Model; Project A Model; Project B Model)

2.) Create task specific permission groups (eg., "CreateProjects") that will be assigned to users filling that specific role...

User Role: Responsible for creating the initial project model, populate the users and assign their permissions, add specific model views (using add-model wizard), add new resources, clients, etc. (Basically what ever needs to be done to get the new project's model up and running, ready to be turned over to the project's lead/manager.)

Problem is there is not a clear list of what these permissions specifically do... There is a displayed "meaning" listed in the table under "List of Available Permissions", but experimenting to find there specifics is VERY slow and inaccurate...

Any ideas, locations for more info, or anyone else's experience?

Example: What permission enables a user to import CSV data? What is the actual difference between "Use Version Control" and "Configure Version Control" (seems to grant same permissions?)

General Board / Creating MSDE Repository with EA Scripts
« on: November 02, 2005, 01:58:16 pm »
I'm running EA 5.0 build 772 on my laptop with MSDE 2000 installed. I downloaded the EA script for building the repository, but just don't know how to get the script into an Access Project to execute?

Kind of a newbie at this...

Thanks in advance for any help!

Uml Process / System Context Diagram - modeling
« on: January 28, 2009, 08:01:42 am »
A context diagram has a center object that represents the System Under Development (SUD), with different external systems surrounding it.

These "external" systems communicate with the SUD in some fashion and are usually "linked" to the center object (sometimes in a way that indicates their information exchanging capabilities, in, out, or bidirectional)

The purpose of course is to help establish the scope (or boundaries) of the SUD... "No that's not our system...  We will use Oracle as the... Well do we really want to automate the..."

Okay, that is how I think of it... So using UML we would need:
  • an element to represent the SUD located in the middle,
  • an element to represent the systems external to the SUD, and
  • an association between these elements to represent the information exchange.

My thinking is:
  • the SUD would be the "Actor" that is used to represent the system (rectangle notations)
  • the external systems would also be represented by an Actor. When it is a automated system I use the rectangle notation, stick figure when it is a person.
  • the links between the actor's would be an ""nformation Flow" with the "Direction" attribute defined (Unspecified, Source -> Target, Target -> Source, or Bi-Directional)

My goal is to be able to maintain this conceptual view throughout the life of the project using UML elements and automation (e.g. adding of an external systems, etc.)

Thoughts, suggestions, different approach?

Uml Process / Onion Model of Stakeholders (Share Profile)

Uml Process / Use Cases - Prmary Actor (Multiples?)
« on: January 03, 2007, 05:57:25 pm »
I have a question about associations between actors and use cases...

Most use cases will be modeled with a primary actor:
e.g., Actor_1 <<use>> UC_A

A usecase that has a generalization relationship:
e.g., Actor_1 <<use>> UC_A <<generalization>> UC_A1, UC_A2
These usecases that are specific forms of the general form, if they do not have a <<use>> realtionship with an actor, then their primary actor can be derived to be Actor_1

A usecase that has an extend relationship, if it is in fact a stand-alone use case would by definition have it's own primary actor...

My problem is with modeling a usecase that has an include relationship with two or more use cases... If it is modeled as an include, then would you NOT identify a primary actor?

I'm trying to understand how I could test the completeness of a model... e.g., All use cases have a single primary actor, or the single primary actor can be derived...

Would/Should I treat "includes" as exceptions to this rule, or should they be modeled with a primary actor (if so which one would serve as the primary?)

This is NOT a major issue, but I am working on integrating MS Word with EA data (via SQL) for documentation generation, and I am trying to understand/develop a style that is consistant an logical...

Thanks for the comments ahead of time!

Is there a broadcast event for when an element is changed?

I would like my add-in to be able to respond before a change to an element is committed... e.g., Trap change to the "Alias" field.

<EA_OnNotifyContextItemModified>
I'm a little fuzzy on this as it does not seem to indicate WHAT of the element was changed?

Thanks,
David
