General Board / Can't create a file when thaat file already exists
« on: July 23, 2009, 02:54:57 am »
This message is now popping up whenever I open or close EA?  It pops up before I try and open any EA project.  I have no idea what file is causing this problem and why this just started?  My version of EA is:

7.5.844

General Board / Forward Engineeering XML Source Code Comments
« on: June 14, 2008, 02:44:32 am »
Is there any way to filter sections of comments that are added to the Notes section of an element?  Typically the remarks section of our source documentation contain a lot of XML tags that are forward engineered directly into EA and don't look so nice when generated into an RTF.   For example <see> tags and <list> tags...

General Board / Diagram Gate versus Message Endpoint
« on: December 19, 2005, 04:52:05 pm »
What is the different uses of these?  Typically I use a diagram gate to show an input into an interaction diagram from some common endpoint(s) in other diagrams.   I use the Diagram Gate on both the exit and entry points.   Why is this different then using a Message Endpoint?

General Board / Interacting with a Base Class
« on: December 09, 2005, 08:12:03 am »
What is the best way, using a sequence diagram, to show how overrided members interact between the derived class and the base class.  Since the 2 classes are still only a single instance should there only be one lifeline??

General Board / Breaking up large diagrams
« on: November 16, 2005, 04:04:37 pm »
When a diagram gets too large I like to break it into multiple diagrams so they all print on a standard 8.5x11 sheet of paper.  What is the best way to show the fact that more information is available on another diagram?  How can the diagrams be linked together so you can navigate the entire model?  Is there a consistent way to do it for all diagram types?  (Use Case, Communications, Class, and Sequence diagrams).

General Board / Setting Property Values In Sequence Diagrams
« on: November 09, 2005, 05:16:22 pm »
When using a class that doesn't have specific getter and setter methods for a property.  (Such as VB.NET).  How do you show setting a property value as a message in a sequence diagram?

General Board / Need Help With Team Design Dynamics!
« on: November 04, 2005, 05:02:11 pm »
Currently I work with a fairly small team that does not have assigned designer roles.  Each team member does their design work and reviews it with the team.  After review is complete, they implement.  In the beginning, this seemed like a reasonable approach.  But, now I am starting to have my doubts.  The biggest problem I am having is that certain team members just don't seemed to be cut out to be designers.  Their C background and experience constantly tells them that the only way to design is to write it.  I've tried introducing Use Case Analysis, Domain Modeling, Sequence Diagrams, ...  But, they:

A)  Cannot appear to look beyond the code
B)  Still can't see any benefits
C)  End up trying to write code using UML

They just cannot back off and look at things from a higher level.  This problem has been going on for nearly 2 years  :(

Either I am a horrible teacher or this is just NOT going to happen with these people.  I am sure I am not the only one to run into this kind of roadblock.  Anyone have any good ideas on how to turn this around?

General Board / Why the red dot next to my controlled packages?
« on: March 29, 2005, 11:22:35 am »
I've had my packages under source control and just recently all of the packages are now showing a red dot next to them.  I've checked the Package Configuration and everything is OK.  I am sure someone in our group did something to cause this but I am not sure what they did and how to undo it.  Help..

General Board / Version Control and Nested Packages
« on: June 30, 2004, 05:17:09 pm »
If I am using nested packages can I place each level under seperate version control?  (Or only the lowest levels?)  What happens with the child packages if I checkout a parent?  There doesn't seem to be any recursive checkout going on when I try and set this up.  Can anyone help me understand the best way to take a project with multiple levels of packages and work with version control?  Thanks.

General Board / UML question:  Linking sequence diagrams
« on: July 07, 2004, 12:35:56 pm »
I'm new to UML and sequence diagrams and I would like to know what is the best way to show common or shared functionality without having to redraw it over and over again within each sequence diagram that uses it.  Also, I have the same issue if a diagram gets too big and I would like to break into parts.

I'd use packages for this with most other diagrams.  But I am not sure if this is right way to do it for sequence diagrams.

General Board / 729 Instability?
« on: June 18, 2004, 12:40:58 pm »
After working with the 4.00 trial version for a few weeks, I just purchased a license and downloaded the 729 version.  But, using version 729,  I am getting random crashes to the desktop when trying to open and edit properties of a class.  The model I am working on is the same one I developed using the trial version.  (without ever seeing this problem.)

I've tried accessing properties in all ways possible (From the Project View, Right-click diagram, Double-click diagram, ...)  But, no matter which way I access them, EA will randomly crash.  (Some times it works fine.  Later try and access the same class and a crash occurs).  The crash occurs when trying to open the property window for the class, or for just Attributes or Operations.  After the crash, If I reopen the same model and try the same operation it works fine.  Is this a known problem?  Does anyone know any workarounds?

Thanks in advance,
John
