General Board / Can't create a file when thaat file already exists

This message is now popping up whenever I open or close EA?  It pops up before I try and open any EA project.  I have no idea what file is causing this problem and why this just started?  My version of EA is:

General Board / Forward Engineeering XML Source Code Comments
« on: June 14, 2008, 02:44:32 am »
Is there any way to filter sections of comments that are added to the Notes section of an element?  Typically the remarks section of our source documentation contain a lot of XML tags that are forward engineered directly into EA and don't look so nice when generated into an RTF.   For example <see> tags and <list> tags...

General Board / Re: Class generation from Sequence diagrams

The operations must be created ahead. Once they are in the class you can select them from the drop down. There's also an enhancement request to allow creation of operations out of messages.

???  I do this all the time using build version 792?

When I define my domain classes they are usually blank.  When it is time to create a sequence diagram I just drag instances of my domain classes to the diagram.  I then add operations as I fill in my sequence diagrams.  All I do when adding a message is press the operations button on the message dailog which displays the dialog for the class that allows you to create a new operation or use one that already exists. The class has to exist and you need to be sending a message to an instance of it and then there is no need to have any operations predefined.

Do you mean "Code Generation" ????

Because, Class Generation is very commonly done using sequence diagrams:

Sequencing a flow between domain classes is a great way to generate the operations and attributes of a class.  I do it all the time.   Everytime you add a new message between two classes, just click the Operations button and add the message as a new operation on the new class.  If you diagram your entire Use Case in this manner you will generate the classes you need.

Right click the use and under adnvanced settings select Composite Element.  Then, right click the use in the project explorer select Add->Sequence Diagram

General Board / Re: Communication Diagram - Messages Ordering and
« on: April 20, 2006, 12:21:01 pm »

The only possible action allowed by EA is to move the message around. When I clink on the message, a box is drawn around it and there is no way I can pick one of the corners. The only operation allowed is the one provided by the four direction arrows icon. I even tried to zoom in (who knows? Perhaps Im not that acurate using the mouse...). In the sequence diagram it works fine, but not in the communication diagram.

Thanks again!

Oops.  Sorry, the text I was resizing on one of my communications diagrams was the Link Name not the Message text itself.  I see what you are saying now ...

1)  I see.  I don't know the answer there

2)  You just need to resize the box by grabbing one of the corners.

1)  You can click the Start New Message Group button while you are adding them.

2)  Just click on the text and resize the box to be the size you want the text to be.  Make the box taller to allow multiple lines to fit and the text will automatically wrap to the width you set the box to.

Are you using SourceSafe??

I've had this exact problem and haven't found any resloution myself.  Other than going into every package and manually reseting it.  (painful!)

General Board / Re: Sequence Diagram and reverse engeeniring

Am I missing something here?  Are people using sequence diagrams to write code?  Or, do they feel that reverse engineering a sequence diagram from code is a good way to document the code?  I've never understood the value of either generated code from sequence diagrams or generating sequence diagrams from code.  What am I overlooking?

There are some books out that try and explain this problem from the authors point of view.  I like Craig Larman's "Applying UML and Patterns".  He does have examples at every step of a typical development process.  But, there is no way a single EA example could possible communicate the same information that is in the book.  There are just too many interpretive concepts and opinions discussed.

UML is not a process just a toolset.  You need to apply it to your environment.  Therefore, there really is no way to provide a real-life example.   It would be like telling everyone how to write a Word document using only one example.

Do you implement all the interface methods in the class?  If so, it is just showing you the methods.

You do realize most people on this board do this for a living and get paid decent salaries for it?

I suggest looking into a good book instead.  There are plenty of examples in them.
