« on: October 17, 2019, 10:58:50 pm »

.Here, we are running v15, so things may have changed?

Bugs and Issues / Printing out a big data model
« on: October 18, 2018, 12:48:52 am »
We have been working on a large enterprise logical data model in EA v14 and want to print the thing out and mount it on a wall so the wider business can review it
What is the best way of doing this? We have tried exporting into PDF etc. but have found in some cases, attributes have been missed off and it looks a bit fuzzy
Has anyone done a successful print out of a large model?

General Board / RTF - Reporting Tags
« on: September 02, 2015, 07:08:20 pm »
Just starting to look at the RTF templates and the Template Editor

1. Is it possible to get the report to only report where a Tag has a value assigned to it?

2. I am reporting the Elements and their Tags and so get

Package: A

Name  - Priority - Description (Header)

Package: B

Name  - Priority - Description (Header)

Can I force the Header Row to be generated for every Element? As they are split up by Tags!

3. How do you order the tags? - seems to be alphabetical..can you re-define the order the tags appear (both in the properties and in the reporting)?

General Board / Newbie - Selecting Elements and moving them
« on: June 18, 2015, 08:44:44 pm »
Hi this may be a bit of a silly one ...but I am having trouble moving elements

I have an activity diagram, with swimlanes, but all the elements within the lane are too low and I want to drag them up a bit (within lane)

As there are quite a few, I thought I would CntrlA and then drag, but this then includes the swimlanes

If I want to just select the all the actual elements (non-lane) and drag is there a quick way to select and move these without having to Shift / Click on each one?

General Board / Issue with SQL
« on: June 15, 2015, 05:30:20 pm »
Hi, newbie here

Got v12...1214 installed and I am trying to access an older repository on our SQL Server...standalone new eaps work fine

I can get into the SQL Model repository OK and look around but all the elements etc seemed locked...i.e. have puce boxes around them and the options to Save, Update disabled

Been told that I AM in the Users list for the SQL ...are there some things I need to check to work out why this is happening?
or is there something that has to be done to get V12 working with older SQL instances?

General Board / Tagged Values in Speciification Manager

We have added a couple of Tagged values to the Requirement Element
Can you get these to appear as Columns in Spec Manager?

General Board / EA - Document linked Elements
« on: March 16, 2015, 10:30:39 pm »
I am missing something - using RTF, created a nice template for an Activity Diagram

Now in my model, I have AS IS and TO BE Versions of a process
AS IS has all the elements in
TO BE uses the elements from AS IS plus one new/modified one

If I RTF document the AS IS package it runs through nicely in package element order and all looks nice
If I use the same template on the TO BE all I get is the new element (i.e. no linked elwments from the AS IS)
In the simple RTF generator I cannor spot an option to 'Document Linked Elements)

This option IS there in the more complex generator but when I use that instead, it does not document in Package element order?

OK, please point me in the right direction!

General Board / Activity Numbering - Best Practice?
« on: March 16, 2015, 08:49:44 pm »
This is a bit of a newbie question...

Normally we number our activities in a flow to show the rough sequence (not sure if this is best practice or not...)

However, in EA, creating AS IS and TO BE diagrams, where Activity Elements are to be shared...pulling through an AS IS element onto the TO BE flow will include that number which now may NOT be correct in terms of the sequence.
So question is, what is best practice? use the EA sequence (as ordered in package and forget the numbering)?

Obviously if an Activity is the SAME for both flows I would prefer it to remain the same single entity for both.

Is there a better way of doing both maybe? using Alias in some way or other????

General Board / Documenting Tips Needed - EA Models and Word Docs
« on: March 09, 2015, 10:18:12 pm »
In our BAU/Small Changes team,we regularily get a lot of Business Requirement Documents arriving ...each has the usual Business sections of:-
Sign off / Approver /Date
Business Benefits
Business Objectives
Critical Success Factors
These sections, once documented, will not change too much for each BRD

We can then use EA to catalogue all the Hi/Detailed Requirements etc(which may be more organic and expand in detail as we discover more)

My first thought is to create a Word Master Document (for each) with all the Business stuff in and then to include a Word Sub Document with the exported EA model details in - which can then be refreshed

But...Is there a much better way of doing this?

General Board / Legends, Colour and Requirements
« on: February 24, 2015, 01:46:54 am »
As a relative EA newbie, just received v12 and have lots of questions

If we use MoSCoW for our Requirement Priority and want each requirement to have a visible different colour to differentiate MUST from SHOULD etc,,,I have so far used the Requirement Element Status Field (and created the 4 MoSCoW values) which allows me to set 4 colours and to show these visibly in the Catalogue

a) Is this the best way of doing this and add colour?
b) I created a LEGEND to show the 4 colours against MoSCoW. Is there a way of this defined LEGEND becoming a part of EVERY Requirement Diagram (as a matter of course) or do I have to cut 'n paste it in from another diagram every time
c) I also created 2 Tagged Values of 1. MoSCow and 2. Req Owner for each requirement element. Is there a way of using the MoSCoW Tag to effect colour instead of the STATUS field?

Anyone used TFS and EA together and can give me some simple overview of how it all works?

Ta for any help

For any of you out there where these 2 have been successfully used in conjunction can you give me a very simple (i.e. for Dummies) overview of how this is achieved?

We are about to move to EA v11 and have TFS Version 11.0.61030.0

General Board / Mass convert elements
« on: July 13, 2009, 08:43:36 pm »
Some one has just asked me if it is possible to amend a diagram so as to change all the 'Business process' elements to 'Activity' elements  (I.e. without clicking on every element manually in turn and changing them)

Is there some option to do this?

General Board / Creating & maintaining an enterprise model
« on: June 25, 2009, 05:53:56 pm »
We have a number of Project based EAPs holding Process flows etc.
I have been asked if it is possible that these be 'fed' into a central, Enterprise version (showing all our processes)

Can someone explain (in simple layman terms) if this is possible to do

If so, can it be dynamic? i.e. changes in the source models are replicated into the central version without an on going management/import overhead
