It all worked out.
I used the following concepts and operations, as you pointed out:

 - Concept: IBD diagrams display part property usage.
 - Concept: Nested blocks (defined in the BDD) are all inherited in the IBD, but the IBD does not display them by default.

 - Op: Use the Synchronize Structural Elements op to populate the IBD's top level with the top
         level parts of that block (described by the IBD).

 - Op: To display inherited nested blocks "sub-blocks" (defined in the BDD):
          For each block usage, open Features window > Parts tab. 
          All the "sub-blocks" (part properties) appear hidden, by default. 
 - Op: Click the checkboxes to display the sub-blocks, as required.

 - Op: To display inherited ports, for each block usage, open Interaction Points tab. 
          All the block's inherited ports appear hidden, by default. 
 - Op: Click the checkboxes to display the ports, as required.
