v15.2 Ė BPMN Annotations canít render internal adornments
« on: February 23, 2021, 01:25:10 pm »
We're used to using internal adornments in notes (bolding, italics, colour etc.)  In the Notes properties of items and subsequently exposing them in diagrams.  We've noticed that this also applies to notes that are linked to the item Note.

However, if we try with BPMN2.0::TextAnnotation items, these adornments are lost!
BPMN v2.5 Specification section 7.4 Use of Text, Color, Size, and Lines in a Diagram does not seem to inhibit this for such notes.  The only guidance that the BPMN Specification seems to make is that the default textFormat attribute is "text/plain".  This would imply that other formats should be available.

Thoughts?

In short, exposing the capability for rich text to shape scripts was put in the too hard basket.

The only guidance that the BPMN Specification seems to make is that the default textFormat attribute is "text/plain".  This would imply that other formats should be available.
All it really means is that unless a textFormat is specified in an exchange file the descriptions should be interpreted as plain text. Alternatively, that the spec writers knew that users would want more, tool vendors would provide it, but they didn't want to go into further.

(my emphasis)
On first reading this seemed anomalous, but on reflection were you saying that because the other Notation types weren't using shape scripts they could handle rich text and but because BPMN uses shapescripts, it can't handle rich text?

Yes. All shape scripts convert the notes to text format before printing.

Thanks for confirming that, we're playing around with some options for Annotations.
